Trauma-Informed Therapy

Trauma-informed therapy using an Intergenerational lens considers the collective experiences of a group of people and how their coping mechanisms, beliefs, and behaviours could be passed down through generations.

Using this approach, we will work to understand and unravel how experiences of trauma, such as violence, discrimination, and oppression could have impacted your mental, emotional, and physical health.

Exploring how past experiences may be impacting present-day behaviour, will allow a path for healing and breaking cycles of trauma.

Using an empathetic and collaborative approach we will co-create a safe and supportive space for you to explore and understand the impact of trauma on your life and build resilience. We will also work to develop coping skills, and foster a sense of community that allows for dialogue and connection to take place.

LGBTQ+ Affirming Therapy

LGBTQ+ affirming therapy is an approach that recognizes, affirms, and supports the diverse identities and experiences of individuals within the LGBTQ+ community. Together we will co-create a safe, sex-positive, non-judgmental, and inclusive environment to explore cultural and gender identities, along with sexual orientation. We will consider your unique experiences and needs,  approaching them through a:

  1. Culturally Competent Lens: recognizing and valuing your cultural background, traditions, and beliefs.
  2. Intersectional Perspective: considering the experiences of multiple forms of oppression or discrimination based on intersecting identities such as race, ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status, and ability which could impact your mental health and well-being.
  3. Collaborative and Client-Centered Approach: we will work closely to understand your unique needs and goals while tailoring interventions and  adapting them to honour your identities and experiences.
  4. Affirmative and Empowering Environment: we will work to challenge heteronormative and cis-normative assumptions and beliefs to promote self-acceptance, self-esteem, and authenticity.

Culturally-Informed Counseling

Immigrant and refugee mental health approaches consider the unique needs of individuals who have migrated to a new country due to seeking safety, better opportunities, or reuniting with family. This approach  recognizes the various challenges and stressors that immigrants and refugees may face and aims to support their emotional well-being and adjustment to their new environment.

In working together you can expect a compassionate and culturally sensitive approach. I will work to understand and respect your specific cultural background, experiences, and the traumas or hardships you may have encountered.

During our sessions, you will have the opportunity to discuss your thoughts, feelings, and concerns related to the immigration experience. I will work to help you navigate the emotional impact of leaving your home country, adjusting to a new culture, language barriers, discrimination, and/or the loss of social support networks. We may also address trauma, grief, or anxiety that may arise from past experiences or the challenges of adapting to a new life.

The goal of this approach  is to help you regain a sense of well-being, promote self-care, and facilitate cultural preservation and support with easier integration into your new community.
